ROLE OF INTERIOR AND LANDSCAPE AS MEANS OF CHARACTER’S CHARACTERISTIC IN THE NOVEL “BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S” BY T. CAPOTE

Abstract

The article deals with components of compositional speech forms of description (landscape and interior) and its functions in a literary text, among which there are: semiotic function, which is a common core in our perception of natural
objects, function of actualization of both temporal and spatial continuums of the text. It is proved that surrounding space can be either open as during the landscape description or closed as related to the interior.
In the novel “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” the interior both defines one’s social status, relates to the temporal continuum of a text as far as the interior refers to the epoch time. The quantity of landscape and interior description is not numerous.
Landscape description create logical structure of the novel, realize local and temporal function and reveal emotional state of personages, actualizing in such a way psychological function of landscape.
Interior is represented in the novel by description of apartments of the main character Holly, narrator and Joe Bell’s bar. Details of interior of these apartment point out the heroes’ characters, their individual tastes and interests, reveal emotional state of heroes in different periods of their lives. Means of description in the novel are represented with epithets, simile, metaphors and hyperbole and expressive means of syntax – enumeration.
