IMAGE OF LOVE IN NEW ZEALAND POETIC TEXTS: COGNITIVE AND PRAGMATIC APPROACH

Abstract

The research focuses on revealing the image of LOVE in the poetic texts of New Zealand from the cognitive and pragmatic perspective. The image of love occupies a significant place in the fiction of any country. In line with the traditions of cognitive poetics and linguopragmatics, we tried to explore the image of LOVE, represented by poets from another continent. Illustrative material was the famous poetic works of New Zealand poets of the late XIX – early XXI centuries. The aim of the article is to study the features of verbalization of the image of LOVE by identifying ways of understanding and pragmatically determining means of speech embodiment of the image in New Zealand poetry. The article provides an analytical review of the scientific heritage on the problem of studying imagery in the cognitive dimension and analyzes the results of research on poetic texts in the cognitive and pragmatic aspect. Based on the cognitive theory of verbal poetic image, we define the image of LOVE as cumulative. With the help of implicative features of archetypal (LIFE, WATER, BALANCE, POWER), stereotypical (BALANCE, POWER, CYCLE, PATH, BASIS, INFINITY et al.), ethnocultural (MANA) concepts extract the sense of the image of LOVE, the richness and diversity of which emphasizes the multi-layered image. The study highlights the pragmatic properties of the image of LOVE in the poetic texts of New Zealand, the dominant strategy of motivation is defined, which is implemented by tactics of intrigue and manipulation. The use of such strategies and tactics provides a perlocutionary effect. Strategies and their tactics are mainly expressed in interrogative sentences, the subjunctive mood of the verb, and imperative constructions. The pragmatic property of such language tools lies in their illocutionary power. The examples given in the article and their analysis from the point of view of a cognitive and pragmatic approach made it possible to conclude that the cumulative image of LOVE in New Zealand poetry contains a number of verbal poetic images through which the author's pragmatic attitudes are realized.
