This article examines the problem of metaphors transmission of a novel “Shantaram” by G.D. Roberts in accordance with criteria of adequate translation (verbal conformity of created image; preserving the original image; preserving the conceptual basis of verbal metaphor). The ways of transmission of conceptual metaphors (fear, poverty, truth, friendship, politics, hatred, sadness, danger, prison) have been analyzed. It’s clarified that imagery of metaphors in Ukrainian language has been achieved via translation of original metaphors by various means. Original metaphors, related to the rooms of Arthur Road prison, are transmitted in Ukrainian language with means of transcoding; metaphor of politics – by means of accurate translation; metaphors of truth, sadness – by means of descriptive translation; metaphor of hatred is transmitted by transposition; metaphor of optimism is transmitted by means of interpretation; metaphor of danger – by means of omission of the simile. Demetaphorization has been detected in the transmission of conceptual metaphor of poverty.
