UKRAINIAN PROVERBS IN GERMAN TRANSLATION OF IVAN FRANKO

Abstract

The article investigates German translation of a selection of Ukrainian proverbs prepared by Ivan Franko for the German magazine «Aus fremden Zungen». It is dedicated to describe the origin of the translation. This article presents for the first time Ukrainian originals of the proverbs. Franko’s decisions as a translator are presented on the grounds of the Functionalist Approach (H.J. Vermeer, K. Reiss). The article provides an evaluation of the translation strategy and translation methods of Ivan Franko.
