THE PECULIARITIES OF THE TRANSLATION OF SOME ENGLISH MILITARY TERMS RELATING TO ARMAMENT AND TACTICS OF THE ARMED FORCES OF UKRAINE

Abstract

The article is devoted to the lexical features of the certain military terms translation related to weapons and tactics, namely, “Army”, “Missile troops and artillery” in accordance to national standards of the naming the armed services, branches and armament. During our research we used: an observation method to gather the necessary information of using the military terms in different countries, including ones which belong to different military blocks: the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the former Warsaw Pact, and non-aligned states; methods of induction and deduction to determine the reasons for the use of certain terms in a particular country; methods of analysis and synthesis to determine the correct match for the compound term “missile troops and artillery” depending on the context of the conversation; etc. As a result of an analysis of the semantics of the respective terms, the historical traditions of their use, it is found that the English translation of the term denoting the ground component of the Armed Forces for the countries that were members of the NATO block before the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact is the term “Army”. The same applies to non-aligned countries in Europe, namely Finland. At the same time, the ground component of the Armed Forces of the former Warsaw Pact (“Ground Forces”) in the Englishlanguage sources is referred to as “Land Forces”, more rarely “Ground Forces”. An analysis of the concepts that denote the terms “missile” and “rocket”, as well as the English translation of the common names of artillery ammunition, showed the most correct translation of “missile troops” term. In addition, the term “Missile troops and Artillery” in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is understood to mean the same as in the United States Armed Forces the term “Field Artillery”. The analysis concludes with the choice of the military terms for correct translation, depending on the context, in particular national peculiarities in military matters, including the concept of foreign military doctrine, organizational structure of the armed forces, weapons and military equipment.
