MULTIMODAL CONSTRUCTION OF THE ILLUSTRATED LITERARY TEXT “PADDINGTON AT THE PALACE” AND “PADDINGTON AT THE ZOO” BY MICHAEL BOND

Abstract

The research is devoted to a critical review of multimodal construction of verbal and nonverbal construction of illustratedtexts for children.In our research, we used the theoretical works of the founders of multimodal linguistics G. Kress and T. van Leuven, aswell as the concept of narrative modeling of literary texts for children of A. Tsapiv. In our work we have identified the featuresof verbal and nonverbal construction of illustrated texts, based on the following concepts: narrative technique, visual-verbalnarratives (those in which the visual plan of expression dominates). The interaction of text and images in visual narrativeshas attracted the attention of many scholars, whose research has focused primarily on identifying the basic principlesof such interaction and defining the functions performed by images.To determine the non-verbal methods of creating a narrative of English literary texts for children, we use the workof G. Kress and T. van Leuven, in particular the theory of frame composition on the principle of information value, salienceand framing. The aim of our research is to systematize the scientific research on the multimodal nature of narrative texts, in particularfairy-tale narratives addressed to children's readers. Thanks to the narratives that make up the symbolic plots, according towhich reality is classified, that it is understood. Accordingly, we set the task to analyze and systematize the featuresof verbal and nonverbal construction of illustrated texts. The material of our research - the texts of English-languagefairy tales of the XXI century, namely – illustrated literary texts “Paddington at the Palace”, “Paddington at the Zoo” byMichael Bond, which will clarify the specifics of their textual and multimodal structure.
